Our Story:

The Moot Bar

A few hundred years ago in Alfreton, community and justice went hand in hand. The heads of households received acre strips of arable land in return for their communal services. To ensure this plan was effectively carried out, officers were appointed. The rules and regulations that maintained this system became the custom of Alfreton, carrying the force of law.

These disputes were settled, offenders tried, and penalties inflicted at meetings known as Moots. These gatherings took place at a convenient spot in the old market place at the ancient Moot Hall, where today stands the war memorial at the top of Moot Hill, now known as King Street. It is believed that this village Moot of pre-Norman days is the very origin of the British jury system.

In 2024, as you sip on your cocktail or pint of ale, imagine the debates and decisions that once took place at Moot Hall on the Old Market Place on Moot Hill. Welcome to The Moot Bar, where every drink is a toast to our rich history.
